Prevention Science is the study and application of evidence-based strategies that reduce risk factors and strengthen protective factors to prevent negative outcomes—such as substance use, violence, and mental health challenges—before they start. It focuses on using data, community input, and proven programs to promote healthier, safer communities.
In San Juan County, the San Juan County Prevention Action Collaboration (SJCPAC) applies Prevention Science by:
- Collecting and analyzing local data to identify root causes of youth substance use and other challenges
- Implementing science-backed programs in schools, families, and communities
- Building partnerships that support resilience and positive youth development
- Evaluating the impact of prevention efforts to ensure long-term success
SJCPAC uses Prevention Science to drive real, lasting change by aligning community resources, voices, and actions around strategies that work. Our goal is to create a future where all youth in San Juan County have the support and environment they need to thrive.
